Gender Wars, Part Deux

Borrowing The Demon Etrigan's Gender Wars idea, here's the World War II version. It's a modification of Air Fighters Comics (Hillman, 1941) V2#2. The comic book cover that I used is not from the Grand Comic Database (that version is rather crappy). I either found it from the Wikipedia article on Airboy (here), or the same place the Wikipedia editors found it--the Classic Super-Hero & War Covers page at Ben Samuels' Classic Golden Age Comic Book Cover Gallery.

The GCD says that the cover art is by Fred Kida. According to the Wikipedia, Airboy was created by writer Charles Biro with scripter Dick Wood and artist Al Camy.

I must say, a promising cover. Paul

It's a wonderfully dramatic cover with a sexy villainess, which is what drew me to it. It's also a reasonable clean and uncluttered cover, compared to how messy some super hero covers are.

On the other hand, as I cleaned up the cover, I noticed several inconsistent details that now bug me every time that I look at the cover. :-(

I wonder how she manages to get her shirt to do that....

Perhaps the same way that Hollywood starlets prevent "wardrobe walfunctions" on the Oscar, Emmy, and (especially) the Golden Globe red carpets--double-sided sticky tape. ;-)

Great work. I love the Bronze Age classic comic look. Love to see more.

Great work.

Thanks!

I love the Bronze Age classic comic look. Love to see more.

I'm looking, but it's tough to find a good strong female on the cover of comics from that era, either as a villain or hero, that I think can be reworked into a TG storyline. It's mostly female sidekicks, love interests, or damsels in distress. :-(

Even when you can find a strong female from that era, the covers can get pretty cheesecake-ish. ;-) For example, America's Best Comics (Better, 1942) #25 with (I think) Miss Masque (with the Fighting Yank and the Black Terror in the crystal ball):

America's Best Comics #25 w-th Miss Masque

Check out Wings Comics for some pretty remarkable covers. For a while, they changed their cover formula from "people in airplanes shooting each other" to "people in airplanes shooting each other, and gorgeous girls are involved, too."

Most of them were fairly typical "damsel in distress" scenarios, but a few of them had girls who were real fighters!

Wings Comics had a moderately schizophrenic output for their covers. Some covers have very realistic airplanes, but for other covers you wonder if the artist had ever seen an airplane up close. There's oddball covers like the American seaplane shooting down a German fighter, as well as the one with the Devil! Near the end of the run, there were even a few scifi covers!

There are some strong females (like the gal in #87 who's 'manning' a gun turret [albeit in a low-cut blouse, very short skirt, and stiletto heels]). Some of the damsels in distress covers seem to have a little bondage angle to them (like #94). And what is it about women parachuting in dresses and spiked heels (see #93)?!

Wings Comics #87 Wings Comics #94 Wings Comics #93

I wonder which of the females on the Wings Comics covers is "Jane Martin: Ambulance Nurse" (redhead, blond, or brunette)?

I think that there are a number of the Wings Comics covers that would be good for TG storylines.
