The final set, and another brief article from that alternate universe where these were the comics that were actually published:

********************

Shown below is our final gallery of covers featuring April O'Day, Transgender Time Agent. The first pair are the final two covers she featured on during her original run in GIRLS' LOVE STORIES, while the third is from her later series in YOUNG LOVE. That particular story has Dirk, the time fugitive who used to be Adam O'Day's ex-wife Tina, re-entering April's life. Dirk is now an artist in New York, and April agrees to sit for him. Despite their altered genders, the old feelings are still there, but April is wracked with guilt about having wiped away all his memories of their life together in the future during their previous encounter.

The final cover is from the comic that featured April's final appearance to date. Vertigo is DC's line of comics for mature readers. (The one shown is the pre-publication publicity version which had yet to have the price, bar code, date, and mature readers advisory added.) In 2001 they published a one-off anthology comic named YOUNG LOVE after the earlier romance comic. The title was ironic, however, since the stories concerned themselves with sex rather than with romance. In her story, April travels to a town where a time fugitive has become the local sherrif. A man-hater as a woman, he was not too happy at becoming male as a result of the time trip and has taken this out on the men who became women on the same trip, three of whom he has forced into prostitution at the local cathouse, which he also runs. April goes undercover as a dominatrix to discover all she can about his operation before she closes it and him down. A dark tale, and definitely *not* one that could have been told during her original series.

I think you should actually pitch "April O'Day, TG Time Agent" to DC! Vertigo has produced stranger things!

Nah, they do stuff far more off the wall than this in Vertigo. Although, doing it as a recaptioning of the original romance comics would be interesting and - from their pov - cheap!

Marvel recapped some of their own old romance comics recently - an idea I have to wonder if they got from browsing sites like this - but for the most part I wasn't very impressed by the results. Too many of their writers just used it as an excuse for mockery, which is the easy, lazy route to go. Seriously! If you want to confirm the truth of this try recapping the romance story of your choice, first by mocking it, then by producing a serious story. I guarantee you'll find the latter harder.
