One thing you notice when you look at enough romance covers is that the "evil woman" who was making the heroine cry was catty, with a satisfied smirk; and she'd stolen the man away from the heroine by smiling lies. Yet it's my guess that in real life, when one woman manages to steal a man away from another woman, it's almost always by sexual wiles, not by lies and whispers. And yet, on the covers, never was the "evil woman" sexy. This total shutout was either because (a) the teen-girl readers of these romances found the idea of bedroom competition to get a boy to be way too threatening to want to read about, or (b) the Comics Code Authority decreed, "Thou shalt not put sluts on the cover."
In any case, of my three recaps above, the last two covers represent the sum total of the overtly sexual "evil woman" romance covers that I was able to find after all my searching. (Except that I didn't look at Charlton. I don't like the look of Charlton covers.) If there are any DC or Marvel romance covers that I've overlooked with sexy villainesses on them, sing out. |
