Hello,

I thought I'd try my hand at a comic cover. I'm sorry its not very imaginitive. I spent a lot of time on the recaptioning and not much time on the idea!

Love, Debbie

Good job! Nicely "seamless," hard to tell anything's been altered....

Two more quickies. Not so much work in either of these

These are actually good quality. From the technical standpoint, I can't tell anything has been altered. The lettering looks very comics-standard, for example. They also successfully come across as short-short-short stories, with a bit of mystery in "newgirl2" about just what the heck happened.

Thanks for sharing them.

Thanks for the comments. Especially from BobH and Suedenim whose recaps inspired me!

Sehlat, I'm glad you like the mystery in "newgirl2". I deliberately left it ambiguous so everyone can make up their own story :)

If anyone is interested I've been using the Gimp which is free software. I can't imagine how BobH copes with paint!

If I had to pass on one tip to anyone else trying this it would be to deliberately blur the new text. I found it looks obviously false if its too sharp.

just because of that matter already is discussed here, i show a modification i did some months ago.

the original is by Femur.
the translation is by me.
(i hope Femur does not consider this a copyright violation. i did it, because many of my friends neither understand any english nor have internet)

i did it wholly without any software. - except of windows, ms outlook, scangear, ... of course.
i used the traditional way: scissors, glue, graphic marker + some rescans inbetween - stone age i guess.

and i admit, that is to see.
i didn't find enough time to retouch the edge of the cut.
i had to refresh some outlines by marker because of the loss of quality by rescanning.
and i didn't care for the background color of the title (just not the right copic-marker by the hand).

femur might forgive me the diminishing of qualitity of his excellent original for this not perfect attempt. but it was a quickshot, thought only for home use.

but i think about this:
for me, neither having appropriate software, nor having enough time by far to learn working with this software (!!!), the traditional handmade method (which i have properly learned a long time ago) seems to be an alternative to the digital way.

the result here is merely improvisated, far from any approach or attempt to professional. if i had it planned for posting here, i might have done it a little bit more carefully. (sorry, but forum were not yet that time-:-)

i think for some of the here shown recaps it should at least bring quite good results in a reasonable time to do it.
at least i am much faster with scissors and glue, than with any software i can imagine - and i know whole-lotta much goddam scrap of user-violent software out of the comic or graphic sector, which i have to struggle with at work all days!

or is that idea beyond the honor of nowadays computer-based comic-freaks? (-: if misunderstandable: i don't want to offend anyone with this :-)

of course, this way is not suitable for mass production. then it might pay to invest the initial efforts for buying and learning software.

(((-: at least, Triona Testaferrata, Principa Transamazonica is the third reincarnation in a straight line :-)))

Triona: I think using whatever works for you is always the best way to go. My fully recapped story 'Bodyswap Romance' (you can find it under 'Modified Stuff' at the top of the page) may have been recapped using Paint Shop Pro, but I amended the title by hand using whiteout, scissors, and glue, then scanning the end result. There is no 'pure' way of doing this stuff, only whatever does the job.

just didn't mean to talk of a "pure" way.
only i thought by watching the discussions here, that the traditional, non-digital way already has been forgotten by many. seemed so at least.

and some people seem to struggle quite hard first to get and then to use software. thought it were a good idea to remind to something that maybe most of us have already learned in their youth, at least if they are still old enough

True enough! It hadn't even occurred to me before now! (But then, I've always been more comfortable mucking about with computer programs than working with my hands!)

I enjoyed all three of Debbie's recaps. It'd be great to see a whole series based on "New Girl Romances".

Somehow I'd missed this one. Debbie does nice work, and it's great to see another GIMP user in here.

As regards the digital/non-digital route, I use both. If I'm building a cover from scratch, as in my Indiana Jones and Dan Dare counterfeits, I sketch out the idea on paper first. If I'm going to strip a cover back to the basic image before putting on new titles, text and speech bubbles, I tend to print the basic image and play with the layout with a pencil on paper.
