Warning label -- every "Spells R Us" thingamajig comes with a warning label, and in every story, the warning label gets ignored. I continue the tradition.

princessjenni: Yes, I remember that. If you ever saw the old movie Groove Tube, with Ken Shapiro, Richard Belzer and Chevy Chase, they had a very funny sendup of it, R-rated, for "Gerutan." The real thing, Geritol, was basically vodka with medicinal flavoring. In the Groove Tube parody, a woman is stripping and rubbing her underwear into Chevy Chase's face while he's looking at the camera and pitching Gerutan. They cut to a closeup of the bottle and a spoon, I think. Then they cut back to Chevy in bed with a foot on either side of his head and a lot of thrashing under the blankets, while he utters "My wife, I think I'll keep her."

GrimG: Thanks for the recap, I'm going to read it.
I personally heard Gore's comment. It, like all Gore comments, was slippery.
He claimed to have been on the committee who approved the internet. I'm paraphrasing, and I didn't take time to read the Snopes article.
My point is, Gore attempted in an indirect way to convince people that he was responsible for the creation of the intertubes. Just like I could say "I personally helped put Bill Clinton in office" -- just because I voted for him once. He's just intellectually dishonest.

I don't know if I've mentioned it here, and some of you may be familiar with it, but I believe (I could be wrong) it was at the environmental summit, some bigshot convo, where Gore quoted a scientist as predicting the polar ice cap could melt in 5 to 7 (?) years, a ridonkulously short time, whatever the exact interval was. To Gore's embarrassment, that scientist he "quoted" was in the crowd, stood up, and stated he never made an official prediction like that, that he had speculated in private to Gore.

Let's not even talk about Gore and Tipper's crusade to censor music.

Gore the Whore.

Gee Mavra, tell us what you really think!

GrimG: I'm sorry, I just can't pull out my Latin dictionary, but very literate!

I remember the old Bond movies: M: "Double 0, we just got a message over the Telex! SMERSH is murdering operatives in Istanbul!"

007: "Yes M. I received the same message from my personal passenger pigeon! SMERSH is also killing all of the Dodo birds down under!"

Mavra:
Tristra: I can't figure out which one is the most disturbing. Babies drinking cola is pretty bad.
I think the woman's head on a tiger skin rug is the most offensive: It kills an endangered species and has a man putting his foot on a woman's head. What were they thinking?

I think for me it's the WIVES gift one.
Less visual but more insulting.
Though the tiger skin rug and the baby ones are pretty bad.

the worst one has to be "If your husband ever find out" about the coffee, IMHO. The one about "is it ALWAYS illegal to kill a woman?" Is pretty bad too though :P

Mavra, the Latin in the Gore recap is filler that I copied from the CorelDRAW X4 user manual. I have no idea what it says. However, in a few places in the Gore recap, I used English.

*Blatantly fishing* Nobody has anything to say about the "Spells R Us Cigars" recap?

Mavra:
Suedenim: 16-bit?? I think you give it too much credit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teleprinter
According to this, it was 5-bit Baudot code.

I was just reading off the original ad text.

Wow Suedenim: I had to magnify that ad to see the "16-bit word" comment. It's not a true 16-bit computer I believe, but they use 16-bit segments for lettering. There was probably no ASCII, I think it was all EBCDIC back then. Way to go, detail-oriented person!

I like the list price: $6800!!!! What a great deal!
