The reason its all quiet on The TGCaps forum front.

I've noticed several posts from Femur and Rachel Beck amongst others regarding how quiet the forum on TGCaps.com is.
I think I have the answer to this.
Every single re-capped page on TGCaps has a comment box underneath the image. A viewer can leave a comment regarding a single image and never have to visit the Forum page.
Imagine if TGComics introduced a similar feature for just one of the featured artists here, CBlack for instance. Nearly all the comments, related threads, praise, abuse (!), technical questions and answers etc, would disappear from the Forum and re-appear on assorted pages in CBlacks part of the Artists section.
If such a system was applied to all the artists on site, the Forum would suffer badly just like TGCaps' has.
Perhaps TGCaps should get rid of the comments and hope posters will go to, and use, the Forum instead.
Just my two pence (cents) worth.

I can buy that. I cruise over often, but leave no "footprint." So now, the question is, are the comments sections seeing more "action?"

I've been watching the caps and I don't see allot of comments. Maybe they are being sent privately.

I have also noticed that some parts of the site don't seen to update correctly.
I use the RSS to keep up and often times the links from there lead to file not found and I wind up going back to the home page and hunting from there.
Also lately I have run into a server error on many pages.
I can tell that they are working on it so I haven't written a grip.

As far as comments on the forum I usualy only comment there if I like a whole set that came in at once or I like a subject that pops up. For single caps I comment on the cap page.

What gets me is there have been a few different good discussion topics and some caption contests that have popped up over there and immediately died.

This is more than comments on the caps, people are just not checking the forum.

I think it comes down to most people want to snag some caps but they for one reason or another don't want to comment unless there is a good subject thrown at them.

I think here since all the commenting is done on the forum people are more inclined to peruse other threads or comment because others are commenting.
There have been a number of times here that things have gone unsaid for days about a new comic then someone gets the guts to open a new thread about it and the comments explode with people rushing out of the wood work to give there two cents.

Basically no one wants to lead and no one wants to follow.
But no one wants to risk standing alone.
Until one stands all sit.
but once one stands many stand with them or against them depending on the topic.

I personally find TG caps hard to navigate.
It's hard to find whats new and whats old and already read. the links from the homepage don't link you to the latest caption or comic either and I find it irritating to get dropped in the middle of a row of pics.

Some captioners use the "last" for their latest work and some seems to do the other way around.
All this confusing stuff makes me stay away from the sister site a bit, and the deletion of threads with "stolen" pics from the internet on this site makes it less interesting to be active here.

I'm having a bit of a "commercial breakdown" with the whole TG comics-TG captions thing at the moment...;)

How would you know if they were? You'd have to trawl your way through 100s (1000s?) of pages, one at a time.
On a forum you could tell instantly.

I automate the process and view about 10 to 15 at a time.
but I have the attention span of a rodent on crack.
Most people can't do that.

What a wonderful expression! What an interesting concept.
I'm off down to my local pet shop to buy a rat, a mouse and a hamster....

LOL, Please do not get the little fuzzy things addicted to illegal substances.
Even though there are laws that cover most of that situation they may be compelled to create more just to fill in the gaps.

This is true. The comment box has killed many a forum. That's why many a webcomic don't have forums anymore. Why bother.

tristra?
I live in the UK. Our entire Government is law mad. If they can find a way to arrest misdemeaning mice, hash-addicted hamsters or spaced out rats (sorry, my thesaurus's clockwork failed :-)), they will.
But seriously, Dee is right, a Forum needs to be fed to thrive.

PLEASE don't get rats addicted to crack. Then they might do something unsavory to support their expensive craving -- such as to become lawyers/solicitors.

Not even a crack rat would sink that low :)

I am reminded of a study when I was in college regarding how cats with FIV would respond to heroin over a prolonged period of time.

Apparently PETA had a problem with this experiment being performed :P

---I think my primary reason for not going using the forums there has to do with the color. Yes it's a stupid reason, but I find it hurts my eyes.

As a regular contributor at TGCaps, I'd like to respond to the comments and issues raised here:

-> Server Errors -- Femur has increased the server memory and the errors have vanished. Not to say they won't return if/when the site's activity increases. Please thank Femur since this means additional expense to maintain the site for its fans and contributors.

-> Linkage differences -- Femur has 'trusted' several of us to upload, manage, and even announce our own contributions. Each of us has our own preferences on image management, thus you'll see one's link start at "Last" while another goes to the first of the newest series of additions (this is what I try to do). The 'admin tool' isn't the best either, so some may have better mastery of it than others. Meanwhile, this is a new and unique strategy that greatly reduces Femur's workload. It's bound to improve.

-> Forum-vs-Comments -- Frankly, at TGCaps neither is much used, despite the generous 'hit' counts on pages and images. To illustrate, for the 30 recent additions to my , I've gotten no Forum reaction and only 5 total comments (2 of which were on the same image, and 2 by the same viewer). I'm no better than most about commenting on others' work, but it would be nice to see at least a little interest! (Even if my own work has become passe and/or uninteresting, I would hope someone would be honest enough to say so.)

TGCaps may have its faults, but it is still a one-of-a-kind site that deserves our support.

I do visit TGCaps occasionally, but I think the thing that bothers me the most about it is that there's no link back to the TGComics page. I think that would certainly get me to at least drop over there occasionally.
