To suedenim: What version of Paint Shop Pro are you using? Version 7.0.

The color replacer tool is great for fixing up solid colors, such as background, titles, etc. [although if you abuse it, especially with the Golden Age comics, you end up with something that looks better than brand new ;-)]. The color replacer tool doesn't help as much when there is a spread of values for a color to show shadows and highlights.

To AndiJF:

Perspective is a bear...

My eyes point in slightly different directions because of an operation for outcrossed eyes when I was very young. Because of that, I have no parallax depth perception (I have the same perception of depth that you have if you close one eye).

Masks: I need to find a good tutorial on masks. It's something that I haven't learned to use.

The most common cause of greyish, unsaturated colours on original cover scans is the overall tone distribution. That's usually the first thing I fix on a cover after resizing it to my standard 500px width.

I usually do some general cleanup before resizing, because I've found that the resizing can sometimes emphasize the defects in the source image. After seeing your tip on using the histogram tool to fix faded originals, I figured out how to do that in PSP and do that after the resizing of the original. Unfortunately, that didn't help the Mary Worth cover much.

Updated note: Actually, the first think I do is rotate the drawing if it is crooked. So many of the covers in the GCD are off by a fraction of a percent (usually .2 to .6%).

re: Roundup cover: Is she or isn't he?

Answering my own concerns, I decided that cover was too subtle. I gave it a TG title as well, using the Boy into Girl title that I had already used (for one of my earliest comic cover modification). I've edited my original posting of that cover above so that the two versions are side-by-side.

Time for a new genre:

This time it's alternative comics and underground comix. The cover is from Young Lust (Co. & Sons, 1970) #1. The Young Lust comic book series was done as a parody of '70s romance comics. There were eight issues published between three different publishers.

The cover art is by Bill Griffith (who is best know for the comic Zippy the Pinhead).

Somehow I missed this last addition. It's a distinctly "different" style of drawing and cover... Frottage or fromage? You decide.

This couple badly needs a visit from Trinny and Suzannah though. I wouldn't be seen dead with a guy in that green jacket and horrid tie. Pale lipstick is seldom a good look at any time, and it certainly doesn't work with the heroine's top.

I hadn't done any comic book recaps in awhile, so here's my latest. The original was Romantic Story (Charlton, 1954) #80.

SoCal,

Romantic Story #80 is a great recap. You tell an entire story in just a few words. And what a story it is. A classic sort of tg tale, but not one I've seen too often in cover recaps.

Great job!!!

Thank you, femur.

This is one comic book cover that I'm glad I let sit in my pending file for a long time. Originally I'd planned on making small changes to both the mother's and daughter's dialogue (and possibly even give it a new title), but I think that it works well with just the changes that I made to the text box. I think that this recap was easier to do with very little modification because I was working with such a classic TG storyline.

I have been trying very hard not to repeat any story ideas. Still, when I went back through my files I found that I had already used the son-raised-as-a-daughter idea in one of my other comic book cover recaps: The Young Doctors.

[I've also done two very different mothers-with-crossdressing-sons recaps, with Black Magic and my Halloween recap. I have also used the classic domineering-stepmother storyline in my "Her Stepson's Makeover" pulp paperback modification. I think that I'll try to avoid creating any new modifications using mothers or stepmothers for awhile unless I can find a very good cover and a very different storyline.]

PS: I think one reason that the story idea may be fairly uncommon in recaps is that I don't think that I have ever seen a mother-son combo used in any magic and sc-fi transformation recaps (while mother-daughter combos have been used fairly often in mainstream entertainment, such as "Freaky Friday"). [Whoops--just found one: Lorna's Bikini Beach -- Tricks and Mom.]

I decided to look through my files to see if I could find any more mother-son combinations in magic transformation recaps. I found three sons transformed by their mothers--all in Spells R Us recaps by femur: sru027, sru077, and sru078. I especially enjoyed the interesting twist in Spells 'R Us #77.

Spells 'R Us #77

I also found three mother-son body swaps. One was an Altered Fate by femur (af027 [with a caption by Bashful from a caption contest]), and two were Altered Fates from the defunct modified4U website (afates01-15 and afates02-10).

Interestingly, I also found one son transformed by their father (sru029 by femur). It has a wonderfully dramatic cover with an interesting storyline: "Why would Daddy want me to be...HIS LITTLE PRINCESS?". I'd like to see someone write that story.

Spells 'R Us #29

I also found two father-daughter body swaps: af043 by femur and afates01-09 by modified4U.

Here are the three covers from the defunct modified4U website:
afates01-19: "Gawd, to be stuck as a middle-aged woman. Help!
afates01-19: "Gawd, to be stuck as a middle-aged woman. Help!
afates01-15: "Geesh! They must have inhaled too much smoke!"
afates01-15: "Geesh! They must have inhaled too much smoke!"
afates01-09: "It's okay, Daddy. It's cool being grownup....But for that mistake, you are grounded...

Hi, I have ben a member of the forum for a while now and have truly admired the work you all do so I thought it about time that I offered something. It's my first attempt here so please be kind. I had admired this cover and noted a comment elsewhere that the persons hair could be airbrushed to a shorter male style which I have attempted. It also occurred to me that the wanted poster could be modified as well.
